He left active duty and became a member of the reserves at the end of September 2009.
As a military officer, Capt Howie's military career took him all over the United States. He first served the country as a military attorney at Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona for two years. His last duty station was Pope Air Force Base in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Capt Howie deployed in support of homeland security. He was one of less than a hundred dedicated patriots who were chosen to deploy to the Joint Task Force Civil Support (JTF-CS). While there for about half a year, Capt Howie became an expert in how to respond to domestic terrorist attacks and natural disasters.
Capt Howie expertly prosecuted criminals and worked diligently as a trial attorney in litigating the government's case to secure convictions and justice in 17 courts martial. His recent litigation included a trial that led to the only life sentence ever adjudged at Pope Air Force Base. Capt Howie acted as the government's representative and gifted advocate in countless administrative proceedings and ensured justice for the government and all parties involved.
In addition to focusing on homeland security and prosecuting criminals, Capt Howie answered the country's call to serve in a multitude of other arenas that are vital to our national security.
Capt Howie managed and oversaw a program in Tucson, Arizona which provided excellent legal assistance to deploying airmen on civil law matters to ensure operational readiness for all those deploying to Afghanistan and Iraq and to ensure those deployed could focus on the dangerous mission at hand.
Capt Howie also worked tirelessly as a contracts attorney reviewing government contracts valued at over 25 million dollars.
Prior to entrance onto active duty, Mr. Howie worked as Chief of Staff to a representative at the Texas State Capitol in Austin, Texas. As an attorney in private practice he excelled at serving clients with effective and efficient legal representation in various civil and criminal matters.
Mr. Howie also has served as Special Assistant to the United States Attorney within the Department of Justice. In this position as the sole federal prosecutor, he personally prosecuted over 300 federal cases ranging from a wide array of criminal offenses.
Mitchell has nearly 200 years of family history in North Alabama. His grandfather, Dr. Virgil Howie, along with his grandmother, Evelyn Howie, raised eight children in Huntsville. Dr. Howie was one of only a few doctors to have a desegregated waiting room where black and white children could play together during the volatile civil rights era of the 1950’s and 1960’s. Mitchell's grandparents also received death threats on their lives and their childrens' lives for posting bail for African-Americans who were arrested during sit-ins.
Mitchell followed his grandfather’s footsteps when he joined the Air Force and after his military service, like his grandfather, he chose to come home to Huntsville, Alabama to raise his family. Mitchell lives with his wife, Melanie, and son, Ashton who is 6 years old. Mitchell, Melanie and Ashton share their home in Hampton Cove with their rescue dog, Alpine, a true "yellow dog democrat."
